Addressing the climate emergency with sustainable sugarcane
The world is on the brink of an irrevocable climate emergency. It’s a priority for Bonsucro and its members. In this session, we will highlight how sugarcane production impacts the environment. We consider how the changing climate is already affecting producer communities. And, we discuss how sugarcane can offer innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions. We will cover soil, biodiversity, water and health and safety.

Human rights with a gender lens
Women experience business-related human rights abuses in unique and disproportionate ways. Tackling the structural barriers that underpin these requires collective understanding and action. In this session we will look at gender policies in action. We’ll hear how mills and farmers break down barriers and address discrimination issues. We’ll also have some women’s empowerment success stories.

The morning of Thursday 26 March will be a part of our public consultation on revisions to the Bonsucro Production Standard. Anyone is welcome to attend, free of charge. If you would like come along, you will need a ticket – please register your interest with Liz Foggitt via email. Tickets will grant you access to the morning plenary, the coffee break and the breakout sessions. However, you will not be able to attend the afternoon sessions without a full conference pass.

Smallholders success stories on implementing sustainability
One of the most important challenges for global sustainability is to improve the efficiency and profitability of the smallholder producers. And, it’s closely aligned with environmental and social responsibility principles. Bonsucro’s certification for smallholders promotes best practices for sustainable production in sugarcane. Adelante Initiative, The next phase: Protecting workers in a warming world
The Adelante Initiative is an ongoing success yielding important information to help industry leaders protect workers in their supply chain. Researchers will present the latest findings, how they relate to the Bonsucro standard and what steps can be taken to protect workers now. Attendees will hear a brief overview from recent, top publications and how the Bonsucro Standard is relevant to the most recent findings. The session will stimulate a discussion on how Bonsucro members, and others, can work together to use the best available science to protect their workforce.

Code of Conduct clinic
Following a decision from Bonsucro’s Board of Directors, Bonsucro has been working to revise its Code of Conduct which was last reviewed in 2011. After an extensive public consultation, the new Code of Conduct will be implemented in April 2020. Mill Tour and Presentation
For the final day of Bonsucro Global Week, attendees can visit the Tala mill and farm. Ingenio Tala achieved the Bonsucro certification in May 2019 and are very keen to invite delegates in. The team will share details of their certification journey and the changes it made to become more sustainable.
The mill is close to Guadalajara and we expect to return by 5pm. One bus will return before lunch for anyone needing to be back in the city earlier. Simply notify the team if you would like to travel back earlier. Agenda:
